Old School Software

Microsoft released FrontPage 1.1 in 1995 and it ran under Windows 95 and NT Server 4. FrontPage was one of the first WYSIWYG HTML editors and it allowed many more people to create web sites as there was no longer a requirement to learn HTML.

The templates were extremely basic, think old Word and Powerpoint templates, and it was very easy to spot web sites that were built with FrontPage. One of the biggest drawbacks was also that many (for the day) advanced features required servers with FrontPage extensions installed in order to function. Also, as you may imagine, many web sites built with FrontPage did not perform well on old school browsers other than Internet Explorer.

Despite these and other drawbacks, FrontPage was an instrumental part of the old school web as it opened the door to many people and companies that could not previously build sites. Microsoft ended FrontPage after the 2003 release (Version 11).
